DyerStraights needs our help!

A 5-year-old male Doberman Pinscher, DyerStraights was found by a good Samaritan three days ago as a stray in a Tennessee town and took in by West Tennessee Animal Rescue (WTAR).

He was emaciated, terrified, and unable to stand up or use his back legs.

According to Shannon Dykstra, president and founder of WTAR, although scared and in pain, DyerStraights trusts humans quickly and loves dogs. He even smiles when people come to visit him and tries his best to walk toward Shannon. Check out his rescue video below.

With the help of a wonderful vet, he's now pain-free and making amazing progress. But DyerStraights' recovery is far from over. While he's struggling to walk, he also suffers from a strong case of heartworms.

We want to help DyerStraights and get him the care and treatments he needs to get better. So starting now, we'll be donating 20% of our proceeds from the sale of our handmade collars, leashes, and dog tags to WTAR. Rescue Partner: Walkin' the Bark Rescue

When I think about Walkin' the Bark Rescue, I think about Popeye, a 2-legged dog rescued across the ocean from Taiwan.

A small, grassroots nonprofit rescue run by volunteers, Walkin' the Bark Rescue is passionate about saving harder-to-adopt dogs, dogs that nobody wants, including older dogs, sick or injured dogs, fearful dogs, nondescript black dogs, Pit Bull mixes, dogs like Popeye.
To these dogs, who are the nation's most unwanted dogs, Walkin' the Bark Rescue is their last and only chance at life.

Chilly and I had the opportunity to meet Popeye and Judy, founder of the rescue group, and follow their work. From pulling injured dogs from high-kill shelters, rescuing fearful strays in their neighborhood, to donating money to others to save needy dogs in other areas, Walkin' the Bark Rescue does its best work.
When we first fostered 10-year-old Chilly a day before her scheduled euthanasia, Judy helped us by listing Chilly, who was labeled by the shelter as "unadoptable" for suffering from stress/anxiety, on her website in search of an adoptive home, giving us advice on training as well as supplements to help with Chilly's arthritis. Chilly, an old dog with behavioral issues and a bad hip, is another representative of the unwanted dogs that Walkin' the Bark Rescue works to save.

We're proud to have them as our new Rescue Partner. Through our Rescue Partner program, we donate a portion of our proceeds (20% from sale of collars, leashes, and dog tags, and 10% from all other items) to nonprofit rescue groups to help them with their wonderful work. Customer Spotlight: Marshall

Marshall is making up for lost time these days.
A 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Marshall is one of 175 dogs rescued from a large Missouri puppy-mill last September.

For most of his life, Marshall existed in a 2'x2' cage, alongside other terrified dogs, many had known nothing else their entire lives. No love, no play, none of them even had a name.
Although rescuers arrived, Marshall wasn't supposed to get that second chance. You see, due to his old age, none of the rescues would take him. So the plan for Marshall and two other senior dogs was euthanasia.
But their rescue angel, a wonderful lady Sandy was there that day and at her own expense, saved all three senior dogs.
That's how Marshall came to live with his new family at the home of author, journalist, and animal advocate Susan R. Stoltz.

Marshall faces a long and difficult road ahead but he has a wonderful family and friends who love and support him.
Marshall's story will soon be told in Susan's upcoming book, "I Survived the Puppy Mill Effect". We cannot wait to read it!

A lovely one-year-old Black Labrador Retriever, Kona is a special girl.

Born with a Liver Shunt, a congenital defect that causes abnormal blood flow between the liver and the body and in turn prohibits the liver from functioning regularly as it is unable to properly rid itself of all the toxins, Kona requires a lot of special care and medical attention.

Helping Shy

We recently learned about Shy when we were contacted by Amy from Two Pitties in the City. A sweet, courageous, emaciated pit bull, Shy was brought to the animal hospital by her previous owner to be euthanized. Seeing something special in her, the veterinarian asked the owners to relinquish her instead. Shy was diagnosed with diabetes and treated; however, since she was brought in so late, she developed cataracts and lost much of her vision.

Amy and vet student Heather have shared Shy's story and opened a chipin page to raise funds for a specialized surgery to restore Shy's vision. Since then Shy has found a loving forever home and received over 70% of the funds needed for her surgery ($2000) from the generous online community!
To help Shy raise the remaining funds needed for her surgery, we have donated collars to be included with other goodies in a Raffle . Also we will be donating 20% of our proceeds in the next 2 weeks towards Shy's surgery.

Rescue Partners: supporting animal rescue

Besides offering high-quality, handcrafted items to dog lovers, Sirius Republic is all about supporting animal rescue!
Through our Rescue Partner program, we contribute to various nonprofit animal rescue groups by donating a portion of our proceeds and whenever we're able to, our handcrafted collars, leashes and dog tags.
It works like this: when a rescue group partners with us, it will receive a unique "rescue code". From that point on, all orders we receive with the rescue code will help that group earn donations. We donate 20 % of the proceeds we receive from the sales of collars, leashes and dog tags, and 10% of all other items. Donations are sent via Paypal or check whenever it reaches $20.
It's truly a win-win program for all involved. So far in the month of March 2011, we've donated to 3 rescue groups already and look forward to contributing more!

Shorter is better: Sirius Republic 4' leashes

Recently we began offering 4' leashes in both the 3/4" and 1" widths after receiving requests for them. Ever since then we've been using and loving them!

Each leash length has its benefits. For us, a 4' leash provides more control and is more convenient.
One of my favorite things about it is that unlike with a longer leash, a 4' leash's short length prevents it from being stepped over by the dogs I'm walking and get caught behind or around their front legs. I'm always walking multiple dogs and constantly stopping to fix leashes is the last thing I want to do!

But of course 6' leashes have their own benefits too. It all depends on your preference and use.

Martingale Collars 101: how to choose the right size

Effective, practical, and comfortable, martingale collars have become very popular among dog lovers.

Originally designed for Sighthounds such as Greyhounds whose heads are narrower than their necks and can easily slip out of traditional side release or buckle collars, martingale collars effectively prevent escape. Their sensible design and effective use have made them a popular and preferred collar for owners of all dog breeds as well as many dog trainers in recent years.

Each martingale collar has 2 connected loops. The smaller, control loop attaches to the leash while the larger adjustment loop goes on the dog's neck. When the control loop is pulled, the adjustment loop tightens. When used properly, martingale collars never choke and work effectively to prevent escape and for training purposes.

Choosing the right-sized martingale collar is very important and different from sizing traditional collars. Below is our simple, 2-step method to correctly size your dog for a martingale collar:

1. Take 2 measurements - circumference of your dog's neck and the widest part of his/her head.

2. Use the larger of the 2 measurements taken in Step 1 as your guide to choose your collar size. For example, if your dog's neck is 17" and his head is 20", then you should choose size Large (18"-22"), NOT Medium (15"-18") even though your dog's neck at 17" falls within this category.

This is important as dogs vary greatly in size, weight and shape. Breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Mastiffs have a wider head than neck (use head measurement to size) while other breeds like Dobermans, Whippets, Greyhounds have a wider neck (use neck measurement to size).

Some news and goals for 2011

Happy 2011!
2010 was an awesome year for Sirius Republic, lots of learning and growing up. We partnered with many wonderful nonprofit dog rescue organizations through our Rescue Partners program, which has allowed us to support these groups by donating our hand-sewn collars as well as a percentage of our proceeds. We look forward to expanding our program in 2011 and helping more rescue groups and dogs.

We also plan to grow our Wholesale Program for our hand-sewn collars and leashes in the new year. We're very thankful for our awesome customers who have provided feedback and recommended our products to their local pet retail stores. We're thrilled that our products are now available at various fabulous shops throughout the country. We are working hard to make available more great items for dogs and their people. New Haven Schools Foundation

Recently we participated in Mutt Strutt, an event by the New Haven Schools Foundation to raise money for educational programs in the New Haven Unified School District serving children in Union City and south Hayword.

The Foundation was established in 1981 to provide an alternative source of funding for programs in the school district. It awards over $70,000 each year in student scholarships, mini-grants for teachers, co-curricular and extra-curricular programs and raises money for an endowment fund.

We're proud to help the Foundation continue to provide funding for these special programs that directly benefit students by enhancing teaching and learning in the classroom.

If you're a dog lover living in the San Francisco Bay Area, as we are, you probably have seen the news segment on KPIX the local CBS station last night about Leo the former Michael Vick dog who is now a therapy dog.
If you missed it, below is the clip telling the story of this amazing Pit Bull, rescued and adopted by Our Pack Inc., a Pit Bull rescue and advocacy group in the Bay Area. Our Pack is also one of our Rescue Partners, a program that allows us to donate a portion of our proceeds to nonprofit organizations such as Our Pack and help them save homeless animals.
I'm proud to add that Leo is wearing one of our hand-sewn martingale collars - The Chief - in the video (not the clown collar, the serious one). Way to go Leo!

Helping rescue organizations help dogs

Through our Rescue Partner program, we are able to support nonprofit animal rescue organizations financially by donating a portion of our proceeds to them.
Our newest Rescue Partner - Save a Mutt Shelter & Rescue - is a nonprofit group that works to save large dogs from high-kill shelters by providing care, training, and transportation services in the Illinois and surrounding areas.

We're excited to have Save a Mutt Shelter & Rescue as our new partner and we look forward to helping this group of dedicated volunteers save more dogs.

Our Rescue Partner program works like this: when a nonprofit group signs up and becomes our Rescue Partner, we create a unique "rescue code" for them. Rescue Partner: Furry Friends Rescue

We're thrilled to have Furry Friends Rescue as our newest Rescue Partner, a program through which we donate a portion of our proceeds to participating rescue organizations.

Furry Friends Rescue is an all-volunteer, nonprofit companion animal rescue group in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

Since it began in November 1998, this team of dedicated, experienced volunteers have rescued over 12,000 dogs and cats!

Furry Friends Rescue saves companion animals destined to be euthanized in many Bay Area shelters, provides them necessary veterinary care, and places them in loving foster home until their adoption into forever homes.

Besides constantly expanding its foster network, Furry Friends Rescue is working hard to pursue funding for its ultimate goal - the Safe Haven Sanctuary, a multi-acre animal sanctuary where every companion animal that comes to their facility will be guaranteed a safe and happy life.

Paws For A Cure

Sirius Republic is proud to support Paws For A Cure and the Susan G. Komen 3-Day For the Cure.

Paws For A Cure is a wonderful fundraising event for the 2010 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Team of Jackson, Tennessee. Our friend Rebecca Todd, who is the team leader, will take her team to join thousands of women and men in Atlanta this October to walk 60 miles in 3 days in support of the fight against breast cancer.

Breast Cancer will claim the lives of approximately 40,000 women and 400 men this year. All of us are touched by this disease in some way, many very personally. We are proud to support the continuing effort to find a cure, to provide education and awareness of the importance of early detection, and to ensure care to the underserved in our society.

We here at Sirius Republic will be donating to Rebecca's team and Paws For A Cure, helping them reach their goal of $18,400.

Supporting animal rescue

As a long time animal shelter volunteer who has worked with and seen countless dogs being adopted into wonderful homes over the years, I believe in the work of our animal shelters and rescue organizations.

When I started Sirius Republic, I wanted it to be a partner and a friend to animal rescue groups and a year later, we have gained many.

We support nonprofit animal rescue groups in various ways - donation of our products (mostly collars and leashes), and most recenty donation of a portion of our proceeds.

This new program - Rescue Partners - allows us to donate 20% from applicable sales to participating nonprofits. It works like this: once a nonprofit partners with us, we create a unique rescue code for them and anyone who places an order on our website and enters this code helps that rescue group earn 20% from the sale. It's easy, absolutely free, and open to all nonprofit rescue groups.

We also support animal rescue groups by participating in various rescue events to help raise much-needed funds, most recently the Sacramento SPCA's Doggy Dash on June 5, in which they raised almost $200,000, their biggest event ever!

On August 1, we'll be returning to support our friends at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society in their annual fundraiser Bay to Barkers. This year's event is especially important because of the recent tragic fire that destroyed its facility and the lives of 15 cats.

New Beginning New Hope for BEBHS

Yesterday our mailman delivered us a thank you note from the Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society (BEBHS), along with an update on its recovery after the tragic fire that destroyed its facility as well as the lives of many rescue pets over a month ago.

While they're still drawing out their long term plans, BEBHS staff members have found temporary solutions to continue their work in animal rescue, made possible with the help of many individuals, veterinarians, organizations, and businesses. Sirius Republic is proud to be apart of that group to have supported this wonderful organization through the years including this recent tragic incident and we will continue to support them so they can focus on what they do best - rescuing and re-homing animals in our communities.

On Aug. 1, 2010 will be BEBHS's 13th Annual Bay to Barkers dog walk and festival fundraiser. Sirius Republic will be there in our regular booth in the north parking lot of Golden Gate Fields in Albany. This is one of BEBHS's biggest fundraisers of the year and their need is greater than ever at this time. Please come out and join us to support one of the oldest animal shelters in our communities.

Martingale Collars 101

One of the most frequently asked questions I get from dog owners is about Martingale collars-how to use them, what are their benefits, etc. So I decided to share some info that may be helpful to people who are not familiar with this type of dog collars but are interested to learning about them.

History of Martingale collars:
Originally Martingale collars were used mostly on Greyhounds as well as other hound dogs that have smaller heads as they can easily slip out of a traditional buckle collar.
When wearing a Martingale collar, as the dog pulls or tries to escape, the collars tightens around the dog's neck. And when the dog stops pulling, the collar relaxes back to a comfortable state.
This prevents the dog from getting out of its collar and when paired with proper training, can slowly discourage the dog from pulling.
Martingale collars soon became popular tools among dog trainers and owners alike, and their use has expanded to all breeds of dogs.

What is a Martingale Collar?
A Martingale collar is consisted of two loops, a larger loop and a smaller loop that's also known as a control loop. These two loops are connected together by metal hardware.

How to put on a Martingale collar?
With the dog facing you, extend the large loop to its longest length and put it over the dog's head. Now adjust the collar back to a comfortable length around the dog's neck.

How to use a Martingale collar?
When you're ready to take your dog out for a walk, attach your leash to the D-ring on the small/control loop. Now when you pull on the leash or when your dog pulls you, the control loop will pull and cause the collar to tighten around your dog's neck. When the pulling stops, the collar loosens.
I recommend walking your dog on the Martingale collar and teaching your dog to heel and walk appropriately. Whenever you want to correct a behavior or get your dog's attention, gently pull and let go of the Martingale collar.
Never pull on the collar continously, always pull and let go immediately, and repeat.

Dog Days of Hollister

On Saturday May 22, we'll be going to the Dog Days of Hollister event at Dunne Park in Hollister, California.

Organized by the nonprofit Hollister Dog Owners Group, this event will feature a variety of fun contests such as best bark, waggiest tail, and most unique costume.

There will be numerous demonstrations throughout the day such as disc dog, rally, obedience, agility and herding.

Many rescue groups as well as dog-themed vendors including Sirius Republic will be on site to offer education, services, and goodies.

Tickets are $3 for adult ($2 with dog food donation). Free admission for children 12 and under and well-behaved dogs over the age of 6 months.

Holiday "Animal Arts" Craft Faire

On December 5 we participated in the First Annual Holiday "Animal Arts" Craft Faire, hosted by the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. It was a fantastic event!

This was our first time visiting HSSV's brand new facility in Milpitas, CA, where they have moved to from San Jose about a year ago. It's a beautiful, comfortable and modern facility. All their temporary, 4-legged residents live in spacious, comfortable habitats instead of wire kennels.

We met many people and dogs, including some familiar faces (past customers) who came out to support us. Many dogs left wearing our handcrafted collars and leashes. Helping our customers kept us busy throughout the day so we didn't get much of a chance to take many pictures as we would have liked.

This Sunday December 13 we'll be supporting Furry Friends Rescue in its PAWS, Art & Wine Holiday Faire at the Pooch Hotel in Sunnyvale. We have donated several collars, leashes and accessories for their silent auction. I have a feeling that it's going to be another fantastic event. Come and join us!

12th Annual Bay to Barkers

We had so much fun vending and participating in the 12th Annual Bay to Barkers event! We met hundreds of dogs and their lovely families, many of whom are now sporting our handmade Martingale collars! :)

The event raised much-needed funds and awareness to help with the animal rescue efforts in our communities. Many nonprofit organizations were on site to do education and community outreach. There were also many adoptable animals there looking for their forever homes and we hope many have found them!

The 12th Annual Bay to Barkers is hosted by the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society and took place at the Golden Gate Fields in Albany. We hope to see you there next year!

Fearing Fireworks: Dogs on this Fourth of July

Sally, our one-eyed Chihuahua mix, despises sudden, loud noises and therefore is not a fan of fireworks on Indepence Day. She's certainly no exception, as personal experience and statistics have shown that most dogs react negatively to fireworks. One sad truth is that Indepence Day is a time during which a high number of dogs become missing or separated from their families as their instinct to run and hide from the loud noises in the moment of panic take them away from their homes and some eventually lose their way back.

As we prepare to celebrate our nation's upcoming 233rd birthday, there are some precautions that we can take to prevent negative incidents and keep our dogs as happy and safe as possible. Here's my list:

1. Keep your dogs indoors. Leash and accompany them when you let them out to relieve themselves.

2. If you're not going to be home with your dogs, try to confine them in a small, secure space such as a crate, or a small area if they're not crate-trained.

3. Whether you're staying home or going out, try to provide multiple safe distractions, such as human companionship, things to chew on (my dogs' favorites are bullysticks!), their favorite toys, background sound such as music or TV.

4. Always keep an eye, ear, and all your other senses out for stray dogs. They maybe lost and need your help to find their way back home! Be a good Samaritan for animals!

Lovin' My "Devil Dog"

Recently some friends of ours who are also proud owners of Doberman Pinschers have successfully trained, participated and passed the Working Aptitude Evaluation (WAE). Hosted by Doberman Pinshcer Club of American (DPCA), the purpose of the test is to evaluate the overall temperment of the dog according to its breed standard. Some parts of the test include having the dog meet "neutral", "friendly", and "mean" strangers, as well as encounter "gun shots".

We read about the origin of this test on the DPCA website and subsequently learned about Doberman Pinschers' vital and brave role in the history of war and the US Marine Corp. During WWII, the DPCA recruited Doberman Pinschers across the country to serve in various roles in the war. As the US Marine Corp's breed of choice, the Doberman Pinschers went through intensive training, assisted their handlers by performing various tasks, and developed thicker than blood bonds with their human companions. Many returned as heros while others perished on the battleground. The official combat dog of the US Marine Corp, the "Devil Dogs" as they have been lovingly branded, the courageous and intelligent Dobes will always be celebrated, cherished and honored, especially by me, a proud Dobe fan for life!

Vacation with Dogs

Following up to my last blog entry, we vacationed in the Northern California coast of breathtaking beaches and redwood forest. I'm having a hard time finding appropriate, sufficient words to describe my sentiments and enjoyment, so I decided to post some pictures of our trip showing glimpses of paradise.

Every once in a while, it's absolutely necessary for everyone to take a break from work and play. Dogs serve as great role models in this department. They live in the moment by mostly enjoying life and only dealing with stress as it arises. We should follow their example by taking time out to just play.
We all face challenges and deal with hardship, but we often intensify the situations by wasting our precious time to continuously stress over our problems. Don't throw away another minute stressing; life is too precious and we deserve to live it happily and pursue things we love.
Practicing what I preach, we're preparing to go on a mini-vacation, a weekend to the Northern California coast and redwood forest. There will be no internet, no phone, and most of all no worries. We'll be walking the trails, enjoying nature and wildlife, cooking, and just spending quality time with our dogs.

Walking to Cure Canine Cancer

Last Saturday we participated in the first ever K9K Walk to Cure Canine Cancer event at Elk Grove Regional Park, Elk Grove, CA. It was in a beautiful location on a beautiful day. Alongside many dog lovers and their beloved 4-legged companions, some living with cancer and some simply supporting the cause, we engaged in 2 walks. Some people held signs showing pictures of their beloved dogs lost to cancer. Listening to their experiences and walking with them, I was sad, encouraged, and inspired!

Altogether we raised over $18,000, all going towards canine cancer research via Morris Animal Foundation. Many people and dogs participated in teams, including Doberman United, of which we're members, the Sacramento Valley Boxer Club, Team Greyhound, and many more.

News alert! I'm so proud and excited to announce that Sirius Republic has partnered with East Bay SPCA to give some special-needs animals a second chance at life.

Club Second Chance is a wonderful and necessary program that East Bay SPCA created to promote the adoption of special-needs dogs and cats. This program provides necessary medical treatments, specialized behavioral training for animals with special conditions. It also help in giving older dogs and cats a chance to find loving homes.

To help support this program and save lives, Sirius Republic has teamed up with East Bay SPCA by offering special discounts to Second Chance Club adopters.

As a Second Chance Club adopter myself, this program is dear to my heart! My very own lovely Sally, a Chihuahua mix, was in poor condition when her previously family gave her up to the shelter. She was missing her right eye and suffering from cataracts in her left eye. She was extremely fearful and stressed. Thanks to the program, she went through surgery to permanently close up her right eye lids to prevent future infections and found a foster home while healing from her surgery. Today she's a happy girl who behaves as if she had 20/20 vision!

On a weekly basis, I help walk, socialize and train the many dogs who temporarily call the shelter home and us their family. Some get adopted right away while others wait patiently day after day. The exciting news almost always come when I show up for my volunteer shift one day, my favorite long-term resident dog is not there because he/she has just found a new, loving home! Nothing is more positive, inspiring, and encouraging than to see dogs that were once neglected or abused get a second chance at love and a home to call their own.

To celebrate East Bay SPCA's 135^th birthday, another volunteer and I are creating an exhibit showing the organization's 135 years of service via historic pictures, heartwarming stories and interesting artifacts. The exhibit will be on display at the organization's Oakland shelter from now until the end of April and then will be on display at its Tri-Valley shelter in Dublin, CA. Come and check it out!

New Beginnings

It's an exciting time here at Sirius Republic. After much preparation including countless hours of painstaking data entry (my litter fingers are numb from typing!), our online shop http://www.siriusrepublic.com/ is live and receiving great reviews from dog lovers everywhere!

It's a new beginning for us. I'd like to think of it as a fresh start of an amazing endeavor filled with endless possibilities, an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to reach our goals and realize our dreams. New beginnings ensue every day, everywhere, identify yours and make it count.
